Dark Avengers Volume 1 is the centerpiece of the Dark Reign era, written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Mike Deodato Jr. Following the Skrull invasion, Norman Osborn is handed control of the world's security. He assembles a new team of "Avengers" consisting of disguised villains: Bullseye (as Hawkeye), Moonstone (as Ms. Marvel), Daken (as Wolverine), and Venom (as Spider-Man), led by Osborn himself in the Iron Patriot armor. The first 16 issues follow this corrupt team as they impose their brutal will on the Marvel Universe, culminating in the Siege of Asgard.

After a hiatus, the title returned in 2012, taking over the numbering of the Thunderbolts series starting with issue #175. This second era, written by Jeff Parker, follows a new iteration of the team—including Skaar, Toxie Doxie, and Ai Apaec—who find themselves lost in time and alternate realities. This run provides a unique look at redemption and villainy, concluding the volume at issue #190 as part of the Marvel NOW! transition.
