📘 Series Summary
Expanding beyond the adaptation of novels, the Classics Illustrated Specials were a series of semiannual, 96-page "giant" editions published by Gilberton starting in 1955. Unlike the core series, these Specials focused on science, history, religion, and global culture. Each issue acted as a comprehensive educational primer, often collecting multiple stories and articles centered around a single theme, such as The Story of Jesus (#129), The Atomic Age (#156), or Prehistoric World (#167).
These issues are highly prized by collectors for their unparalleled artistic pedigree. Because of the educational nature of the books, Gilberton employed many of the top illustrators in the industry, including EC legends like George Evans, Reed Crandall, and Graham Ingels, as well as the "King of Comics," Jack Kirby. The series provides a fascinating look at mid-century American perspectives on technology and patriotism, making them valuable historical artifacts as well as artistic showcases.
📚 Identification Tip: Most Specials were numbered starting at #129 (following the main series numbering at the time of launch). While many were reprinted into the late 60s, First Printings are identified by the 35-cent cover price and the specific HRN back-cover lists that match the release year.
