Classics Illustrated Junior – Fairy Tales & Folklore

📘 Series Summary

Launched in 1953 as a spin-off to the flagship line, Classics Illustrated Junior was specifically designed for younger readers. While the main series focused on literary novels and history, the "Junior" series (numbered in the 500s) adapted timeless fairy tales, folk tales, myths, and legends. The series debuted with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (#501) and ran for 77 original issues, ending its first-edition run in 1962 with The Runaway Dumpling (#577).

The series is celebrated for its whimsical, vibrant artwork by legendary illustrators such as Kurt Schaffenberger, L.B. Cole, and Alex Blum. Each issue wasn't just a story; it was a complete activity book for children, featuring "Aesop's Fables" backups, Mother Goose rhymes, "A Child's Garden of Verses" poetry, and coloring pages. Because these books were often used as workbooks by children, finding high-grade copies without coloring marks or completed puzzles is a major challenge for modern collectors.

⭐ Identifying First Printings

  • The "Coming Next" Ad: Unlike later reprints, nearly all First Editions feature a "Coming Next Month" advertisement on the inside front cover.
  • The HRN Rule: To be a true first state, the Highest Reorder Number (HRN) on the back cover must be the issue number immediately preceding it (e.g., Issue #510 should have HRN 509).
  • Back Cover Pin-ups: The first 20 titles in their original printings featured full-page scene pinups on the back cover rather than a list of titles.
  • Activity Pages: True first printings will have unmarked puzzles, dot-to-dots, and coloring sections.
  • Price Point: Early first editions typically carried a 15-cent cover price, which was higher than the standard 10-cent comics of the era.

⚠️ Collector's Tip: Much like the main series, these were reprinted into the 1970s. Always check the back cover list to verify the printing. If the list goes up to #577, you likely have a later reprint!
