Champions – Marvel Comics – 1975–1978 – #1–17

📘 Series Summary

In the mid-70s, Marvel Comics looked to the West Coast to establish its first Los Angeles-based super-team: The Champions. Originally conceived by Tony Isabella, this eclectic team brought together a group of heroes who didn't quite fit anywhere else. The founding roster featured the powerhouse Hercules, the former Soviet spy Black Widow, the Spirit of Vengeance Ghost Rider, and founding X-Men members Angel and Iceman. Unlike the Avengers or Fantastic Four, the Champions were self-funded and operated out of a high-tech skyscraper in California.

The 17-issue run is legendary for its bizarre mix of cosmic, mythological, and mutant threats. From battling the Olympian gods Pluto and Ares to facing the bee-composed villain Swarm (in his first appearance, #14), the series offered a unique flavor of 70s Marvel action. The series also introduced Darkstar (#7), a major Soviet hero who would go on to have a long history in the Marvel Universe. While the team eventually disbanded due to creative and logistical "friction" within the story, their legacy as "the heroes of Los Angeles" remains a cult favorite era for Bronze Age collectors.
