The cosmic foundation of the Marvel Universe was laid in Captain Marvel Volume 1, introducing Mar-Vell, a Kree military officer sent to Earth to spy on humanity. Initially wearing green-and-white Kree military gear, the character underwent a massive transformation in issue #17, where he was redesigned with his iconic red-and-blue suit and bonded to professional teenager Rick Jones via the Neg-Bands. This unique dynamic meant only one of them could exist in the positive universe at a time, while the other waited in the Negative Zone.

The series reached its creative peak under the guidance of writer/artist Jim Starlin starting in issue #25. Starlin evolved Mar-Vell into the "Protector of the Universe," granting him Cosmic Awareness and pitting him against the Mad Titan, Thanos. This run established many of the cosmic tropes still used in Marvel today, blending psychedelic visuals with philosophical storytelling. The series eventually concluded in 1979, setting the stage for the first-ever Marvel graphic novel, The Death of Captain Marvel.
