In the wake of the Checkmate and Outsiders: Five of a Kind storylines, Batman retakes control of the team in this 2007 relaunch. However, the mission takes a drastic turn during the Batman R.I.P. event, which sees the Dark Knight disappear and leaves the team in a state of chaos. The title was eventually rebranded simply as The Outsiders following issue #14 to reflect Batman's absence from the DC Universe at the time.
