Aquaman (1989) — Volume 3 (Issues #1–5)

A five-issue limited series blending political tension, strange invasions, and personal drama — a key bridge between Aquaman’s Bronze Age past and his 1990s reinvention.

Overview

Aquaman Vol. 3 (1989) is a five-issue limited series written by Keith Giffen and Robert Loren Fleming — the creative minds behind Ambush Bug — with classic artwork by Curt Swan and finishes by Al Vey. Released shortly after The Legend of Aquaman Special, the series continues developing Arthur’s strained relationship with Mera while throwing Atlantis into a bizarre new crisis.

Though short, the mini serves as an important tonal transition, mixing humor, political drama, and sea-monster spectacle before leading into Aquaman’s next major reinventions in the 1990s.

Synopsis

Atlantis faces an unexpected invasion: an army of sentient giant jellyfish sweeping through the kingdom and threatening its borders. As Aquaman rallies defenses and uncovers the mystery behind the creatures, he also struggles with a painful personal crisis — his deteriorating marriage to Mera.

Torn between duty and emotional upheaval, Arthur must navigate political instability, domestic turmoil, and an enemy unlike anything Atlantis has seen before.
