American Century (2001)

A sharp, noir-infused exploration of postwar America — part crime story, part political satire, all Vertigo attitude.

Overview

American Century, created by Howard Chaykin and David Tischman, is a 27-issue Vertigo series that blends pulp adventure, political commentary, and dark humor. Set against the shifting landscape of mid-20th-century America, the book follows a disillusioned man fleeing his life — only to crash headfirst into the corruption and chaos of the American dream.

Synopsis

The story centers on Harry Kraft, a WWII veteran who fakes his death to escape a life he feels trapped in. Reinventing himself in Guatemala as “Harry Kurtz,” he becomes entangled in revolutions, conspiracies, gangsters, political schemes, and journalism — eventually weaving his way through the “American Century” with grit, cynicism, and a knack for finding trouble.
