Amazing Adventures (Vol. 2) — Evolution, Experimentation & War of the Worlds

The most experimental era of the title — from split features and character reinventions to metafictional crossovers and the rise of Killraven.

The second volume of Amazing Adventures began as a split title featuring the Inhumans and Black Widow. Jack Kirby initially wrote and drew the Inhumans, with Neal Adams later taking over art. Meanwhile, Black Widow debuted under writer Gary Friedrich and penciler John Buscema. Her feature ended with issue #8, followed shortly by the Inhumans after two longer solo installments.

With Vol. 2 #11 (March 1972), the spotlight shifted to the Beast, chronicling the transformation of Hank McCoy into his iconic blue-furred form. The storyline began with Gerry Conway, Tom Sutton, and Syd Shores, before transitioning to Steve Englehart, who expanded the supporting cast by adding Patsy Walker and her husband Buzz Baxter.

In late 1972, Englehart, Conway, and Len Wein engineered a now-legendary unofficial Marvel/DC crossover set during the Rutland Halloween Parade. This metafictional story arc connected: Amazing Adventures #16Justice League of America #103Thor #207. The creators even wrote themselves into the stories, making it one of the most unusual cross-publisher nods in comic history.

After Beast’s final chapter in issue #16, the series shifted once more — introducing Killraven and the bold sci-fi saga War of the Worlds in #18 (May 1973). Conceived by Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, Gerry Conway, and Howard Chaykin, the feature soon passed to Don McGregor, whose acclaimed run (#21–39) remains a landmark of 1970s speculative comics. Artists included Herb Trimpe, Gene Colan, Rich Buckler, and most notably P. Craig Russell, who redefined the book’s visual identity.
