Airboy (Volume 1) is a long-running modern revival of the Golden Age aviation hero, reimagined
for the 1980s with a stronger emphasis on serialized storytelling, geopolitical tension, and
character continuity. The series follows Davy Nelson Jr., son of the original Airboy, as he
inherits both the mantle and the unresolved conflicts of his father’s wartime legacy.
Written primarily by Chuck Dixon, the series blends high-adventure aerial combat with Cold War
espionage, pulp action, and personal drama. Over its fifty-issue run, Airboy expands into a
shared universe featuring recurring allies and spin-off characters such as Valkyrie, Sky
Wolf, the Heap, and Iron Major, gradually shifting from episodic missions to long-form arcs
that explore trauma, responsibility, and the lingering consequences of war.
